Barabanki: In an unusual turn of events, four married ladies fled their houses in Uttar Pradesh with their boyfriends after receiving money from the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), abandoning their spouses. PMAY is a central government flagship initiative that attempts to alleviate the urban housing scarcity among the poor – those from the economically weaker segment (EWS) as well as lower and moderate income groups. The government distributes funds to recipients’ accounts under the plan so that they can purchase a home. The Centre has mandated that the female head of the household be the owner or co-owner of the house under PMAY.The four plan recipients took advantage of this clause, and as soon as a payout of ₹50,000 arrived in their accounts, they left their spouses. The husbands, on the other hand, are now facing two distinct problems as a result of this incident: they received a warning from the District Urban Development Agency (DUDA) because the construction has yet to begin, and they are also concerned that they will receive a notice of recovery because they have yet to receive any money from the installment. The puzzled husbands have no idea what to do now, so they have urged the DUDA project officer not to deposit the next installment into the bank accounts that their fleeing women may access. The first installment was deposited into the accounts of these four women beneficiaries of the district’s Nagar Panchayats Belhara, Banki, Zaidpur, and Siddhaur, but they fled with their partners and the money. The strange situation was brought to the attention of authorities when the building work on their residences did not commence. Saurabh Tripathi, the project officer for DUDA, sent a notice and demanded that building on the home begin immediately, but there was no progress even after the warning. The husbands of the ladies eventually arrived at the government office and informed the authorities that their wives had departed with their boyfriends and requested that the second installment of PMAY not be credited. District authorities are now perplexed as to how to recoup the funds from these recipients. Tripathi, on the other hand, indicated that the department is seeking to collect the monies from each recipient.
