Former International footballer Ashok Chatterjee is no more
Kolkata, 22 February (HS):Well known international footballer of yesteryears, Ashok Chatterjee who also represented the country in several international tournaments during 1960s, died at his North Kolkata residence late last night at the age of 77.A very popular player in Centre Forward position, Chatterjee played for Mohun Bagan for four years and then for East Bengal football club for three more years during his hey days between 1961 and 1969 and scored over 90 goals to earn his name as one of the most striking players and huge fame. He also represented India in Mardeka Football Tournament in Malaysia in 1964 and scored goals against Hong Kong, Thailand and Pakistan national teams.He also scored a goal against might Japan in the 1964 Asian Games.His famous goal by a header against Pas Club of Iran in the 1968 IFA Shield Final is also still remembered by many of his fans.Last year he was given the Mohun Bagan Ratna Award by the club,where his body was brought this afternoon before cremation at the Nimtala cremetorium in North Kolkata.
